The DThe Definition of Gay Marriage Lecture
Professor John Corvino of John Wayne State University gave a lecture on gay marriage issues at the University of Oklahoma this past Friday.
The News: Gay marriage is not allowed in the state of Oklahoma and is often not something people like to discuss. Professor Corvino touched on the facts that most people avoid.
The Impact: Professor Corvino mentioned several times in his lecture something called “privileged label,” or in other words, what makes marriage valuable? Another interesting fact he brought up was the actual definition of marriage and what others think about it. Corvino said he could not come up with just one definition because there are so many ways to explain it.
Context: A direct quote used by Corvino in his lecture from Robert H. Knight explains how two lesbians cannot be considered married simply because they are lesbians and that to call it marriage is a lie. It would have to be called something other than marriage.
The Human Dimension: When asked what the definition of marriage is, Pope John Paul II said “ A lasting personal union based on love.”
What’s next: Professor gave the people in attendance of the lecture something to think about and a better understanding of gay marriage. As the state and the country debate further into the issues of gay marriage, these are things to help better support or oppose your views.
