Rowing team preps for new school year

The news: The University of Oklahoma women's rowing team is preparing for the 2011-2012 school year with a brand new roster of women.

The impact: The rowing team had tryouts for the new season the first week of September and 47 new women joined the team. Walk-ons were given an opportunity to show their skills at a Novice meet on August 29.  The walk-ons are part of the Novice team and will spend their first year learning how to row and gaining experience to become a part of the varsity team later on.

The context: Walk-ons do not have to have prior experience and will learn everything they need to know during their practices. The team practices 6 days a week for 3 hours a day. Some days entail early morning practices, which, new member Mariah Wall, says she's trying to get used to.

Human dimesion: Wall says she is excited to begin the season even though she was skeptical about trying out at first. "Everyone kept telling me I should try out and I really didn't want to but then I decided to just do it and now I love it."

What's next: Their first official meet is on October 2 in Oklahoma City. This year, the Big XII rowing championship will be held in Oklahoma City on the Oklahoma river.
